TOWARDS A INDUSTRIAL UNION OF PSYCHIC WORKERS 007/700 Print
Written by A Situationist Worker
Thursday, 16 July 2009 18:26

The Second Temporary Art Strike Action Committee – Alytus Chapter (STASAC-Alytus) has called for an Art strike action against Vilnius becoming European Cultural Capital for 2009, calling for Sympathy Strikes all over the world to support The Strike activities in Lithuania during the whole year 2009.

Just as the art strike Campaign launched in 1986 by Stewart Home which called upon all artists to cease their artistic work between 1990 and 1993 – was, unlike the art strikes proposed by Gustav Metzger and the Art Worker Coalition in the 1960s, not merely a boycott of art institutions through artists, but a provocation of artists addressing their understanding of art and their identity as artists.
In these previous strikes there has been a critical position against Art as a specifically bourgeois construction, and an adoption of the position of ‘Cultural workers’.

As the art strike is not centered on a job or region or trade – it is not a matter for a Job union, a Trade Union but an Industrial Union – that of culture as an industry. However in order to attack the Bogdanovist position where proletarian culture or proletkult is the third part of a trinity of revolutionary socialism, Whereas the unions would attend to the proletariat’s economic interests and the Communist Party, their political interests, the Proletkult would look after their cultural and spiritual life – we should look to the integration of all of these activities into our daily life and under the direct control of the workers at large.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT Print

Fellow Workers,

The constitution of the IWW allows workers to self-define their mode of organising, whether that be on the basis of:

1. job
2. industry
3. region

It further allows workers to be members of more than one Industrial Unijon and also join an IU even if they are no longer employed in that industry. As well as starting organisation from scratch in any region, job or
industry which they identify themselves as being involved in and being unorganised.

WAY TO GO! Print

It's wonderful to hear this!

My memories from the cultural capital of Stockholm in 1998, in short:
- Big empty stupid expensive meaningless “jippo” events
- Deliberate destruction of broad inexpensive creative and networking events by popularist interventions from the well-payed careerist cultural bureaucracy
- Visiting Stubnitz, which had the best program of all and was supposed to be supported, had to return from Stockholm to Rostock with a loss - basically everyone had to work for free during all summer

It's time, as ever, to question the concept of “culture” from the authorities, and ask the questions:
- What do we need? What do we desire? How do we want to live?
We would give different answers.

BANNED FROM LITHUANIA! Print

In a couple of weeks I was supposed to go out to Lithuania to present some of my work as an artist/magician as part of the Alytus Biennial: Art Strike Biennial. But it turns out, owing to a new law past in Lithuania banning anything that gives credence to paranormal phenomena, that my activities would be illegal. The law also bans other activities, significantly anything promoting homosexuality.

For an article on the subject see:

http://www.edgeboston.com/index.php?ch=news&sc=&sc2=news&sc3=&id=93709

I wont be visiting Lithuania. But something else might.

Estonian artist Reiu Tüür sings “Tere Perestroika” originally created in late 80’ies by Estonian punk group J.M.K.E. The song then has strong impact on revolutionary consciousness and stimulated people to rebel. Individual expression & vulgar plagiarism – the real revolutionary Molotov cocktail.

There are no spectators in Alytus art strike biennial – only participants. No concurrence, no art. The art strike is not just distancing from the art making or its consuming – that is a form of highly conscious activism and any documented form of their action cannot be considered as anything valuable so far it was done by lower conscious operators too much dependent from attraction towards the visuality. Experience it, but not just watch!

August 20th, 2009. Officially legitimed political manifestation against art and all forms of “serious culture” and particular focus on hopelessness of cukltural; traditions such as EU initiated sequences of European Cultural capitals what this year was given to Lithuanian capital city Vilnius. The strikers were giving a note to the world to boycott all the upcoming “cultural capitals”. Biennial was turned into collective action annihilating artistic ego: no show(wo)mens, no spectators, no “professional” critics – all are participants. The art strike is not just distancing from the art making or its consuming – that is a form of highly conscious activism and any documented form of their action cannot be considered as anything valuable so far it was done by lower conscious operators too much dependent from attraction towards the visuality.

August 21st, 2009. The term was invented by Russian art activists to go into the streets and to show all the absurdity of the legitimated protest demonstrations. The form still resembles the protest demonstration, but the content drives on creative absurdness and moves on improvisation.
